SoundCloud Files

For these tutorials, I had to use Adobe Audition to edit some audio tracks, put together some interviews, and upload and share the files via SoundCloud. If you want to do audio editing work without spending a ton on annual fees, I suggest checking out Audacity, a free, open source program that works much like the program I used for these tutorials. Please feel free to let me know if you do check out Audacity or enjoyed these audio files. Thanks! Continue reading Audition Tutorials

Why Use Vector Based Graphics?

Many new designers might wonder why they would ever want to spend the extensive amount of time and energy required to learn another image manipulation program on top of Photoshop or GIMP, such as Illustrator or Inkscape. As it turns out, applications such as Illustrator are able to create vector graphics rather than raster graphics, which are pixel-based images like digital photos that become pixelated when scaled up. Vector graphics are based on lines, curves, and other mathematically calculated shapes, so they are infinitely scalable, whether you are trying to make a billboard or a phone icon.

In this set of tutorials, I was initially going to use Inkscape, an open source alternative to Illustrator, but I decided not to since it isn’t as fully functional and would be a bigger risk of wasting a lot of time to get very little done. After finishing these tutorials, I’m glad I made that choice, as they went much quicker than my previous Photoshop tutorials did while using GIMP. In case you would like to look at the tutorials themselves, there are linked here for you: one, two, three, four, and five. Continue reading Illustrator Tutorials

Photoshop Tutorials Done Using GIMP

To Photoshop or GIMP? That is the Question. . .

I recently completed these five tutorials as part of a class project for COM 210 at WSU Vancouver. I am posting these here as evidence of completing the projects (mostly for the instructor), but also to share some of the lessons I learned in the process, especially concerning GIMP and how I used it to complete the tasks involved. Click to check out the Photoshop tutorials for yourself: One, two, three, four, and five.

Note: these were originally tutorials meant to be completed on Photoshop, in which I used GIMP. It was a good learning experience for me to see how to do some basic stuff in GIMP that is normally done in Photoshop. Through this tutorial, I had to do some research to find out how to install plug-ins for GIMP, which is fairly easy. Click the link for a GIMP plug-ins installation tutorial.

I also found a neat page that tells you how to make GIMP work a lot more like Photoshop. Continue reading Photoshop Tutorials Done Using GIMP
